What is EFT?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. This simple technique was developed by Gary Craig based upon his studies with Dr. Roger Callahan and it involves tapping a few energy points of the upper body in conjunction with a neutralizing set up phrase.
Seems pretty wacky
The idea and processes are indeed pretty strange; unlike anything many people have encountered. Skepticism is a healthy thing and belief in the process is not required for it to be effective.

El sistema energético del cuerpo fue ignorado en el campo de la psicoterapia y del coaching o crecimiento personal en occidente hasta hace poco tiempo. Fue Roger Callahan, doctor en psicología americano, quien descubrió que hacer tapping (dar suaves golpecitos con las yemas de los dedos) en algunos puntos de acupuntura, junto con una serie de procedimientos físicos y psicológicos podía aliviar problemas emocionales. Emotional Freedom Technique is used while simultaneously experiencing negative emotions (fear, anxiety, etc.) EFT helps one move from lower to higher emotional states for greater wellbeing. While negative emotions are present, gently tap 5-7 times on the meridian points shown, while repeating the phrasing that fits for your situation.
The effects of EFT are achieved by using a combination of focused psychology whilst tapping on specific meridian energy points on the head and upper body. (For this reason EFT has often been referred to as accupuncture without the needles.)
It is thought that the tapping process of EFT stimulates a part of the brain which controls the primitive flight or fight response. This results in an internal shift from stress to relaxation as stress hormones – like cortisol and adrenaline, that are involved in the stress response – are reduced. So, if stagefright or feeling out of control before or during a peformance is an issue, then with EFT there really is light at the end of the tunnel. What a thought!

This week on Let’s Talk Withdrawal, we interview Dede Moore who shares her own powerful story of antidepressant treatment and withdrawal. Dede turned her experiences into a force for good and now uses the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to assist those in withdrawal from antidepressants or benzodiazepines. Dede tells us about EFT, how it helps in withdrawal and even gives a sample EFT session that you can join in with to experience how it works.
In this episode we discuss:
How Dede came to be taking antidepressant medications
That she had no information from doctors on adverse effects or withdrawal potential
That she was told by her doctor that her antidepressant was like insulin for a diabetic
That adverse effects were just part of her illness and in response doctors increased her dosage and added a benzodiazepine
How, when doctors wanted her youngest son to take an antidepressant, Dede decided that it wasn’t right and that she wanted to stop taking them too
That doctors told Dede it was too risky to stop taking the drugs and they “didn’t know what would happen”
How Dede, with the lack of any official guidance or support, withdrew too quickly giving her many symptoms
How she then tried the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and found that it helped with physical symptoms and the emotional distress of withdrawal
